First page of Core Instructor Competencies

Competent instructors are instrumental in creating effective teaching and learning. The core instructor competencies, identified following the IBST-PI competency development model described in Chapter 2, are organized into four domains and 19 competencies and have 79 supporting performance statements. The four larger domains of competencies include: (a) Foundations, (b) Designing for Learning, (c) Facilitating Learning, and (d) Evaluation of Learning. In the subsequent sections, we describe the four domains and 19 competencies using the validation results of the individual performance statements. The instructors were asked to rate the competencies on a five-point Likert scale: not critical = 1, slightly critical = 2, moderately critical = 3, critical = 4, highly critical = 5.
