Dedicated, committed, and undaunted by challenges, Dr. Melvin Cleveland Terrell contributed significantly to the education of countless students, especially students of color. In his roles as director, professor, scholar and Vice President for Student Affairs, Terrell's work with students included advocacy, teaching, mentoring, advising, and educating through several modalities such as workshops, conference sessions, and publications. His work with students focused on their holistic development academically, socially, and personally, and his mentoring of early career professionals and collaborations with colleagues resulted in a more prepared and diverse pool of educators to serve all students.
Terrell's inspiring leadership and unwavering determination to enhance the success of his students and others earned him the respect and admiration of many and led to a myriad of honors. The honors ranged from president and chairperson of professional organizations to journal editorships and national awards for his contributions to the student affairs profession. He was rewarded generously for epitomizing the old African proverbs, “It takes a village…” and “Each one teach one.” Moreover, as the recipient of many blessings, Terrell demonstrated his commitment to the important Bible verse found in Luke 12:48 (King James Version), “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” Dr. Melvin C. Terrell has continued to meet the requirements to which the verse refers. Without a doubt, one of his legacies will be his service.
