When I was 7, the local high school jazz band came to my elementary school. As was common in our district at the time, the band would make its rounds to all the elementary schools and play for the kids, usually in preparation for a major festival or competition, but this was no ordinary visit; my brother was lead alto sax of the mighty Eastwood High School Jazz Ensemble, multiple-time winner of their division at the annual Reno International Jazz Festival, and the best jazz band on the Peninsula. It was like the Pied Piper had come to town; all of us little rats were mesmerized, and they knew my brother was The Man.
