This volume presented the landscapes traversed by nine faculty members as they discovered the challenges and rewards of civically engaged scholarship. Representing seven different departments and colleges at the University of Utah—English, Family and Consumer Studies, Social Work, Physical Therapy, Education, Political Science, and Architecture and Planning— these individuals, coming together as the Civically Engaged Scholar Cohort (CESC), each contributed two chapters. The first set of chapters (Part I) recounts personal journeys to civic engagement. The second set of chapters (Part II) describes professional experiences—e.g., service-learning classes, community-based research projects—that were, and for many authors remain, important milestones in their individual journeys.
