The intersection of patriarchy, race, and sexuality is manifested in archetypes like the “Southern gentleman,” which originates from White patriarchy, and the Hotep image, also based in White patriarchy, but is seen solely in the African American community. This chapter provides a historical and cultural analysis of the Southern gentlemen and the Hotep image. The chapter also explores how these archetypes manifest in men in the LGBTQ+communities. Lastly, it explores this intersection and frames in the counseling setting. The authors propose utilizing a queer theory lens to provide effective counseling services to LGBTQ+ clients experiencing conflict relating to the intersection of patriarchy, race, and sexuality, aiding in their own queer identity development.
