QUALITY 4.0 has been often focused on exploiting digital technologies (IoT, cloud storage, computing, smart sensors), Big Data, and advanced analytics to address quality, value chain, efficiency, and sustainability challenges. Sometimes the corresponding main goals and application scopes are associated with repetitive, well-defined, predictable, and low-complexity tasks and tacitly try to release humans from the need to perform them. However, under QUALITY 4.0 or even more broadly QUALITY 5.0 contexts, one also often has to address more complex, unstructured, and open problems, where critical thinking, creativity, and innovation play a critical role in the process of finding the solutions that best fit the purpose. Under these scenarios, the human factor becomes an even more central part of the process, playing an active role in all problem or project stages. Technology, data, and algorithms are resources that expand humans’ capabilities toward achieving such challenging goals synergistically and in a complementary way with human intervention, making these actions more efficient, insightful, and impactful.

This chapter introduces the Big Data 3D (Domain/Data/Discovery) Quality Learning Framework as a suggested platform for combining the available resources of data, technology, and analytics for handling such kinds of QUALITY 4.0 and QUALITY 5.0 challenges. Specific examples are used to illustrate the application of this new framework to support Big Data Quality Discovery (BDQD).
