This concluding chapter synthesises key insights from the international case studies presented in this book, exploring the role of policymaking in embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within higher education. Across diverse contexts – including the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), Ireland, Sweden, Malaysia and Indonesia – these cases reveal both successes and enduring challenges in aligning ESD policies with institutional practices. The discussion highlights persistent obstacles such as definitional ambiguity, policy-practice gaps and institutional resistance that hinder cohesive sustainability strategies. Despite growing commitments to ESD, many policies remain fragmented, failing to translate high-level sustainability rhetoric into concrete action. Looking ahead, the chapter outlines future directions for strengthening ESD in higher education. It calls for explicit policy frameworks, cross-institutional collaboration, pedagogical innovation and faculty engagement to bridge existing implementation gaps. Additionally, it advocates for global policy development that embraces diverse regional perspectives, ensuring that ESD evolves as a truly transformative force in higher education. This synthesis reinforces the book’s central argument: effective policymaking is essential to embedding sustainability within academic institutions, shaping higher education as a driver of sustainable futures.
