In this chapter, we introduce the current definitions and characteristics of algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation from the context of digital equity (NDIA Definitions, n.d.). The definitions are not exhaustive, and there are many variations across industries and a level of technical expertise. You will find relevant digital equity focused definitions and characteristics to afford readers a choice to confidently engage with current discourse when considering procurement of a technology solution.

The chapter will include an overview of technology regulation and activism. We will explore policy now and the potential of regulation and activism in the future, such that awareness, best practice and questioning can be confidently underpinned as needed. There will be discussion of regulations such as Data Protection Act (DPA), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), EU AI Act and the World ethical data forum. There will also be discussion surrounding algorithmic activism, with real-world examples namely the Algorithmic Justice League (US), the DAIR institute (US) and the Good Things Foundation (UK).
