Abstract
This chapter uses Susan Simard’s Mother Tree theory as a new framework for conceptualizing nonviolence education. It unfolds four key aspects of a curriculum of nonviolence through this revolutionary ecological lens and the intersection of feminist theory. Interconnectedness thrives on diversity, collaboration, and inclusivity. Intergenerational relationality recognizes historical wisdom traditions of nonviolence, exemplars of nonviolence as elders, and the role of teachers of nonviolence as wisdom-keepers. Stewardship, which is anchored in mindfulness and empathy, acknowledges and champions the needs of all living beings. Creativity is rooted in inventive strategies, inspired imagination, and cultivated change. I support each aspect by examples from exceptional teachers at the forefront of nonviolence education.
