By combining cutting-edge technologies such as big data, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is changing urban environments. By maximizing the utilization of urban resources, bolstering governance systems, and increasing infrastructure efficiency, smart cities, as a crucial part of the 4IR, capitalize on these advances to enhance urban resilience. In addition to making cities more resistant to shocks and stressors, the transformative power of digitalization creates inclusive, adaptive, and responsive urban governance processes. How cities use technology to enhance urban governance is explored in this chapter by examining the relationship between smart cities and local government resilience. The benefits of smart city innovations, including enhanced public safety, optimized functionality, and resource utilization, as well as improved quality of urban life, are highlighted. The challenges associated with digitalization and excessive technological application, such as surveillance-related psychological stress, social cohesion risks, digital inequality, and cybersecurity threats, are also assessed critically. An integrated approach is advocated for in this chapter where smart governance, community engagement, and adaptive policies reinforce cities’ capacity to withstand economic, social, and environmental disruptions. By fostering participatory urbanism and sustainable digital policies, local governments can harness smart city technologies to build more resilient, equitable, and future-ready urban environments.
