Owing to the emergence of innovative technologies in communication sector, it is now possible to call up information anywhere and at any time. Moreover, technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, internet of things and autonomous systems have completely transformed the way of doing things. Smartphones and internet have become an integral part of people's lives these days. However, every technological progress comes with a price. For example, with the launch of newer smartphones, the older devices are getting replaced at regular intervals.
In the recent years, the advancement in digital technologies has become more ubiquitous, thereby affecting the whole society and the economy. Here, confusion arises whether the growing use of digital communication technologies will promote or hamper the transition towards sustainability. In addition, whether this digital revolution will make contribution towards achieving the UN's sustainable development goals and how can the growing energy footprint of digital technologies can reconcile with efforts of transitioning to a low-carbon energy system? Hence, it is crucial to comprehend the role of digital technologies and e-commerce with regard to sustainability.
