The task of drawing conclusions from a Confer

ence involving more than fifty papers, covering

a wide area of complex and rather novel techno

logy is, needless to say, no minor one. Indeed,

in reading through the reports, it seems clear

that a small working group could well spend many

months digesting the material presented to ar

rive at a really valuable assessment of its im

plications. My own concluding remarks, put to

gether during the Conference, obviously fall

short of this objective. It is left to those of

us who are directly concerned with the develop

ment of the HTR to seriously apply adequate ef
