With the aim of obtaining the geotechnical parameters needed for the planning and construction of a new road tunnel between Spain and France under the Pyrenees use has been made of an old railway tunnel to carry out the geophysical and mechanical tests that have permitted the characterization the deformability of the different rock formations that will be affected by the new excavation. SH and SV shear wave velocities obtained in “cross-hole” tests performed inside the tunnel have been compared with those obtained from the spectral analysis of surface waves generated on the tunnel lining by different procedures. The results of the geophysical tests have been checked against the moduli of deformation obtained in dilatometer and plate loading tests carried out in galleries excavated into the rock mass from the tunnel walls.
