The effect of C12A7 and gypsum on the hydration of C3S, hydration mechanism and hydration kinetics of C3S in different systems were studied by various physical and chemical methods, such as quantitative XRD, and determination of combined water content and chemical shrinkage. The results show that C12A7 can accelerate the hydration of C3S, especially its early hydration. When gypsum is present, the accelerating action of C12A7 is remarkable. The mechanism of faster hydration of C3S is through the chemical reaction. Hydration kinetics equations of C3S in different systems have also been brought forward.
