Suppose we envision a society whose laws are designed not to impose some particular social structure or even some particular moral code, but rather to maximize the freedom of individuals in society to live life as they choose to live it, to do what they choose to do, short of doing those things that restrict the freedom of others. What would such a legal system look like? What would it mean? For one thing, the mere fact that an activity or behavior was legal would not mean that society was encouraging or even condoning it. The issue of legality would be entirely separated from the issues of morality, desirability, or even social acceptability. The fact that an activity was legal would mean only that individuals choosing to engage in such an activity are not unduly interfering with the freedom of others to do what they want to do.
