A method for the in-situ determination of gas permeability of waste was developed, based on a gas tracer experiment. Carbon monoxide was chosen as a gas tracer because of its easy detection and low solubility and costs. The tracer recovery rate and velocity of the landfill gas flows were calculated from evaluation of the tracer break-through curve. The good performance of the tracer tests conducted on a landfill site was confirmed by tracer recovery rates of between 57 % and 91 %. The intrinsic permeability of the waste body, obtained through calculation using modified Darcy's law, ranges from 3.1×10−9 m2 to 9.8×10−10 m2; consequently the landfill gas permeability for the observed gas composition of 60 % by volume methane and 40 % by volume carbon dioxide ranges from 2.7×10−3 ms−1 to 8.8×10−4 ms−1.
