Nowadays, there are two important roads that are being built in mining areas in the province of León, they are: “La Autovía del Noroeste” (North-West Motorway) and the Ponferrada-Villablino Road. The first one is a state road that connects the centre of the country with Galicia through Castilla y León. The second one is a roadway belonging to the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León and it is entirely lpcated in the province of León. Both roads cross one important coal mining area called “El Bierzo”. This paper deals with the envisaged utilisation of the “re-washing coal” wastes of a local spoil heap as a fill material and as soil cement in both roads. In addition, the use of red shales in local roads belonging to the “Diputación Provincial de León” (Provincial Administration) will be reported.
