The geological and mining conditions relating to activation of subsoil movements, that occurred in 1996/97 in the area of Piekary Śląjskie near Bytom, are discussed. The movements resulted in the failure of buildings located in one of the housing estates in that area. The state of the damage is described as well as the results of land deformation measurements. The geological, hydrogeological and engineering conditions of the subsoil deposits were analysed, as well as the state of the mining works. An attempt has been made to determine the factors that had an impact on the course of the observed land deformations, leading to serviceability failure of the buildings concerned. Two processes seemed to initiate the macromovements; reactivation of old works in steep coal deposits in the outcrop zone under mining tremors, and mass landslide-like movements in the close-to-surface layers of Quaternary soils and Triassic rock-mantle.
