This paper describes piling experiences in the Keuper Marl at Cardiff. It uses the results of pile load tests, some on normal piles and some on piles with a void beneath, to propose a design method for bored piles in such stratum. The method relies on the measurement of standard penetration test ‘N’ values by the site investigation, sufficient to establish an average value representative of the depth of piling in the marl.
