This paper describes studies to identify reasons for the repeated damage to the Admiralty Breakwater at Alderney. The main causes of damage to the breakwater are identified. The main thesis is supported with results from a wide range of hydraulic, geotechnical and geological studies, as well as from diving and other surveys of the structure. The paper outlines possible engineering measures to reduce maintenance and repair costs.
