The present study compares two bridge management systems employed in Japan (J-BMS) and the USA (PONTIS). The strength of J-BMS lies in its ability to evaluate the present performance of concrete bridges using visual inspection data. PONTIS requires the bridge inspector to assess the present performance of bridge elements based on condition state description. J-BMS works at the object level (bridge level), however PONTIS works at the network level; thus maintenance, repair and rehabilitation activities are planned on priority basis in PONTIS compared with J-BMS. It is recommended that future BMS should include characteristics of both the systems with better life-cycle models.
