The old Kepplerbrücke was built in 1948/49. Several bridge inspections in the mid-nineties revealed severe damage to the reinforced concrete arch bridge. Further investigations showed that the major repair and strengthening measures required to maintain the structure were not economical – and in some areas impossible to carry out. Eventually, after evaluation of all the different aspects, decisions were made towards replacement of the old bridge. The new bridge, a three-span steel composite bridge was built in less than one year and opened to traffic in October 2000. (Project first introduced in [1])
