Concrete Footbridges offer designers the opportunity to develop slender, custom-built solutions suitable for a wide range of situations. Their relatively small scale and light load-bearing requirements means that their size and form are not necessarily constrained by economics. Issues such as vibration, wind loading and vehicle collision loads are more critical to footbridges than other bridge types due to their slenderness. Practicality and aesthetics are also very important considerations, and reducing the number to supports to limit their vulnerability to impact is often preferable. Consideration must also be given to the needs of disabled users, push-chairs, cyclists or horse-riders. This paper will summarise the key requirements for footbridges in the UK and illustrate the opportunities available for designers when choosing concrete, using some case studies.
