Much of Scotland's historic bridges stock is in poor condition and of substandard capacity, with the aging process exacerbated by increased loading requirements and poor maintenance. The challenge for engineers is to find economic and environmentally sensitive solutions to this problem whilst minimising disruption to the existing transport network. This paper investigates the current state of our bridges stock using a sample of over 160 highway bridges and champions the use of reinforced concrete to enhance the strength and restore the durability of our substandard bridges. Case studies are presented that demonstrate the advantages of concrete refurbishment measures particularly in terms of cost effectiveness, durability, robustness of design and minimisation of traffic disruption.
