Feasibility studies of a proposed tidal energy barrage across the River Mersey are in progress. This paper outlines the initial results of the assessment of the energy yield and economic aspects. These show that the addition of flood pumping to the proposed ebb generation operating regime will have a major influence upon the preferred layout and that for the Mersey, in particular, flood pumping offers a significant benefit. A mathematical model has been developed to run on a desktop computer. This has proved accurate and economical in use.
