This paper summarises the work performed by the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) and reported in the Department of Energy report ‘Generic Steel Designs for Tidal Power Barrages’ (Ref. 1). This study was carried out jointly for the Department of Energy through Energy Technology Support Unit (ETSU) and British Steel PLC over a period of twenty two months starting in May 1987.
Steel has previously been considered only on a site specific basis for the Severn. The object of the present study was to establish the appropriateness of using steel at all potential UK barrage sites, benchmarking the results against those obtained previously and thereby creating basic data for the future evaluation of steel. The inherent attributes of steel to form structures with high buoyancy to weight ratio was also investigated to determine the scope for savings, particularly during installation.
