Concrete for the twenty-first century will have to be more durable, more constructable, more predictable and greener. At the same time, it will have to be more cost competitive. This can be done if we understand the relationship among microstructure-development, processing, properties and performance. An example in which by improving microstructure and using innovative processing we can dramatically improve toughness is high performance fibre reinforced cement-based materials. Another example is self-compacting concrete. New understanding of matrix rheology can promote development of more easily constructable concrete. Improved monitoring of concrete during construction is essential to make concrete construction more predictable. Examples of new development in this direction will be presented.
