Lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) can be used for reducing the dead weight of concrete structures. Even a higher weight reduction would be possible with high strength lightweight aggregate concrete (HSLWAC). However, the high cement content in HSLWAC makes this concrete expensive and less environment friendly. Against this background a study was undertaken, aiming at the production of LWAC with a characteristic cube compressive strength at 28 days of at least 65 MPa (Dutch grade B65), an oven dry density of 1700 – 1900 kg/m3 and material costs as low as possible. It was found that with the cement content of 350 kg/m3 – a cement content low enough for an economic mixture – the required 28 day strength could not be achieved with the investigated mixtures. For higher strengths higher cement contents were needed. Furthermore it was found that most of the measures through which a higher strength could be yielded had a negative influence on the workability and costs of the mixture.
