An outline of the challenges in the application of products based on white cement is presented. In the view of the author, the main challenge is to instil a sense of common dependency and mutual responsibility among specifiers, producers and users of these products towards achieving aesthetic durability. As a means of achieving this, guidelines on design, concrete mix design, execution and maintenance are being drawn up at Aalborg White Research and Development Centre for future distribution. Documentation of achievable aesthetic durability when following these guidelines will also be prepared. As basis for this work, an automated colour measurement system has been build. The system is currently being used to determine the initial condition of different concrete compositions and surface textures prior to exposure, and a few results of this work are presented.
