The construction or refurbishment of built assets requires a significant combination of activities and capabilities to succeed, whether using traditional or manufacturing-led construction. Construction sites are historically seen as dirty, messy environments, and so do not necessarily lend themselves to physical automation. However, this chapter covers a number of physical automation solutions that are already being used to either enable or carry out construction or on-site manufacturing activities. Alongside physical construction, there are also a wide range of activities that are more open to automation and are discussed in this chapter, including activity planning, workforce management, progress tracking and reporting and material flows.
