The Author of Paper 9 briefly refers to the

problem of combining extreme still-water sea

levels and extreme wave conditions. This is an

area of considerable importance to the engineer,

who is interested in the probability of the sea

defences being overtopped due to a combination

of tide, surge, wave set-up and wave run-up.

There are some areas of the coast where an

assessment of the correlation of extreme water

levels and onshore wave attack can be made in a

preliminary way. One such area appears to be
