Further to Paper 13,a highly successful solution to the provision of a stable crest to a shingle bank was adopted in 1964 at Weybourne, near Sheringham, Norfolk.
A shingle bank about 200 m long stretched across the mouth of a small stream, damming it into a pond which drained slowly out through the bank. Storm waves overtopped the bank frequently and flooded the valley, lowering the crest of the bank to below HWST. A breastwork was built of 4 x in steel flats bent into a U-shape in the form of a trough, 6 ft wide, 4 ft high at the rear and 2 ft 6 in high in front (Fig. 1), with the steel flats spaced apart sufficiently to retain about 50% of normal beach shingle, in this case ll in. The breastwork was sited along the crest of the shingle bank (Fig. 2).
