A survey methodology for the collection of time series data relating to aggregate waste arisings, recycling and landfill in Scotland is described and the quantities estimated from a pilot survey for 1999 are reported. Data is reported for construction and demolition waste, industrial waste and by-products, and bituminous planings and breakout: additional categories are reported within these as appropriate. Of an estimated 10,200kt of arisings, some 5,200kt were landfilled and 5,500kt recycled (the additional 500kt are accounted for by the consumption of existing stocks of industrial wastes and by-products). Data for recycled quantities is reported in terms of the utility of the application to which the aggregates are put. Targets for the recycling of aggregates in the future are also given.
