A numerical analysis of the interaction between a clay buffer and the host rock of a deep geological nuclear waste repository is presented. A coupled thermo-hydro (TH) axisymmetrical finite element modelling approach has been adopted. In order to verify this approach, results from the numerical model have been compared with experimental values taken from a large in ground experiment performed by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL). The theoretical formulation adopted and the preliminary results from the numerical modelling are presented. A good correlation between simulated and measured results was found for the temperature and moisture fields.
