First page of Opening address

My opening this conference is not inappropriate. As the British Nuclear Energy Society's president I am proud to be associated with this conference which typifies an activity which the Society does very well. However, a conference such as this would not be possible without the efforts of Society members who form the organizing committee and we owe them our gratitude. I must also acknowledge the help we receive from industry and of course the conference organizing team of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The conference also has a special interest for me. Much of my career in the nuclear industry was closely associated with the advanced gas cooled reactor (AGR) and thus I have a strong feeling of nostalgia. Perhaps of some interest I can claim to have been in at the very moment of birth (almost 30 years ago), of one of the main features of the Heysham 2/Torness design, the single envelope, prestressed concrete pressure vessel.
