F.J.L. Bindon, Editor, The Nuclear Engineer If advanced gas-cooled reactors are to form the basis of the British nuclear power programme for the next 25 years what precautions are being taken to safeguard the computer suppliers for the future?
When the hardware and software is obtained from a single supplier, what happens if that manufacturer is 'lost1 perhaps in a market takeover or change of business emphasis?.
What happens about obsolete parts of equipment or compatible replacement?
How dependent is the operation on the computer for safety of the plant and the availability of the plant to continue operation?.
A.R. Kershaw, Paper 1 The computer is not part of the safety case for operations of the plant, but normal operational restraints would apply and the reactor would need to be shutdown within a few hours of computer failure.
