Staycation refers to a vacation close to home or at a familiar place (Molz, 2009). This vacation-making method emerged in the US suburban areas during the 2008 economic crisis. It was a convenient and affordable alternative for conventional vacations then. Now, staycation has spread to other countries and become an alternative for long-haul tourism, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020–2021 (Lin et al., 2021; Yan et al., 2022). A staycation can address financial issues and other travel-constraining factors on the demand side (Crawford et al., 1991). This vacation mode also provides extra opportunities for local attractions and businesses on the supply side (Kay & Wang, 2010).
