First page of Route Guidance Systems

Until recently, route guidance systems were an insignificant element of the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) market. These systems were primarily used by the more sophisticated small-parcel delivery services, trucking firms, and taxi services. With the expansion of the internet and the growing popularity of in-vehicle electronics, route guidance systems are experiencing explosive growth. Current forecasts anticipate that these systems will become a major economic force in ITS. As they become increasingly integrated with the roadside infrastructure, route guidance systems will also have a major influence on transportation management.

Route guidance is the provision of information to travelers to facilitate their selection of a path from their origin (or current location) to their destination.
