SaferSands is an approach to help national and local tourist industries, local authorities and private beach front managers to be better prepared to demonstrate Duty of Care and to better deliver beach safety within a strategic risk management scheme. SaferSands is basically a security blanket for the beachfront owners, investors and the tourist industry as a whole. The initiative is being used to help travel associations in branding their coast and beaches as being “as safe as feasibly possible”.
Using case examples from the UK (Camber Sands, Sussex) and the Caribbean (Mar a cas Beach, Trinidad), the paper demonstrates the need for improved beach safety management at tourist resort beaches internationally. The overarching themes of better education, awareness and regulation remain similar.
The solution adopted for both examples are to take forward a SaferSands Beach Management Scheme approach. The approach to adapting this scheme to the UK situation shall be outlined in the paper.
