As a contribution to the discussion whether there might be adverse effects on pregnancy outcome in the Federal Republic of Germany due to the Chernobyl accident a cohort study was carried out by the Institute for Radiation Hygiene and Infratest Health Research.
The study should give an answer to the following questions:
Are there more premature deliveries in areas with higher radiation exposure due to the accident in Chernobyl?
Are these premature births possibly related to fears about the higher radiation burden at that time?
Are there more premature births in the Federal Republic of Germany after the Chernobyl accident than there were before?
