This course is about leadership in organizations – business firms, public agencies, military units, voluntary groups, political movements, schools, universities, and churches. Although the course is intended for people who expect to be leaders, or to deal with them, it is not useful in a conventional sense and no claim of immediate relevance is made. The course provides neither techniques for gaining or exercising leadership nor techniques of combating would-be leaders. The emphasis is on the complications involved in becoming, being, confronting, or evaluating a leader in an organization. The main argument is that those complications are echoes of critical issues of life more generally. As a result, the readings are drawn from great literature.
