“MEASURMENTS IN THE ESTABLISHING OF SAFE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES”
Messrs. Clow, Melling and Aldous
Post Office Telecomraunications Headquarters.
Reported by Mr. D.H. Mitchell, C.E.G.B.(Berkeley Nuclear Laboratories)
Mr. L.F, McCalvey (international Researchv. Development Co.Ltd.) said that he was surprised at the use of nylon rope in some of the arrester devices. They had a test tower at International Research & Development Company which they had used to test some similar safety devices consisting mainly of a harness and nylon rope whereby a man was able, by means of a control handle, to either pay out the rope or lock it off. The tester had jumped off a 50ft. platform and, at first, had lowered himself cautiously a few feet at a time. However, when he decided to try a bigger drop, and played out about 15ft. before locking off, the nylon rope had stretched by an alarming amount.
