SYNOPSIS. In the creation of a building, the professional designer fulfils not one but several different roles, each with its own peculiar risks and responsibilities. Whether the process of Quality Assurance can help him reduce these risks and deal better with his responsibilities depends upon a recognition of precisely what these roles are and how they relate to those of other people involved in the enterprise. It may be that Q.A. will be more easily applied to some aspects of the designers work than to others. If we use too broad a brush the casualty may be good design itself.
