In Lithuania, participation level in sport was investigated for the first time at the national level in 2002. Hereafter longitudinal surveys on the attitude of Lithuanian residents aged 7–80 towards exercising and doing sport were conducted in 2007 and 2011. According to the newest SPRINTER analysis done in October 2021 (Sprinter, 2021), two-thirds (67%) of all respondents do sports or exercise, and one-third (33%) say they do not exercise. According to the data, the share of exercisers increased by three percentage points (from 64% to 67%) compared to 2019. The main reason for sports is the strengthening of health and physical capacity (74%). Slightly less frequently mentioned reasons are rest and relaxation (40%) and improvement of appearance (35%). The least frequently mentioned reasons for sports are the need to feel the spirit of competition, racing, victory (8%), the desire to acquire new skills (7%) and the opportunity to communicate with other people, friends and make new acquaintances (6%). Only 22% of respondents that participated in a study indicated that belong to a club or are members of a sports group: 7% are members of sports clubs, 6% are visitors to health clubs, 6% belong to communities that organise physically active activities and 5% subscribe to remote/online workouts especially it increased based on the influence of COVID-19 and lockdown.
