Discussion on Papers 10 and 11

These papers throw a different slant on the problems of offshore exploitation. I should like to concentrate my remarks mainly on Paper 11. The problem of exploitation offshore, as was hinted, not only involves getting oil and gas out of the sea or the land beneath the sea, but also converting it or storing it,

e.g. methanol plants, conversion to agricultural products, offshore power plants, etc. In each case one has to meet certain limiting requirements regarding the motions of these structures.

At Glasgow University, on a research contract from the Science Research Council, we have been studying the effect of the topology and size of the designs on motions, and considering the integration of these designs with process or power engineering requirements.
