Chapter 8: Trading Time: A Hauntological Investigation

‘The future belongs to ghosts’ says Jacques Derrida (1991, p. 349) and leads us to his spectres where time and space have been reimagined and reconsidered, thus, erasing ‘the sharp distinction between the real and the unreal, the actual and the inactual, the living and the non-living, being and non-being’ (Derrida, 1994, p. 11). Time is not experienced linearly anymore, nothing dies and anything can come back to life (Fisher, 2012, 2014). Haunted by what is not yet and not anymore, the individual lingers in non-time (Fisher, 2014) longing for their lost futures – the futures that were projected in the past, but never came to be (Derrida, 1994; Fisher, 2014).
