Sir Charles Wilson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Glasgow University, welcomed the delegates and expressed his pleasure that the Conference was being held in Glasgow where the university took the keenest interest in engineering studies and the relationships between their engineers and the outside professions and industries. The task of the university teacher was to strike a tricky balance between what was needed to make a man employable and what was required by the exigencies of a subject which was developing and becoming more and more expert and complex. He hoped that those present would derive a new impetus towards this task from listening to the discussions.
