Cathy Macharis is a professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and visiting professor at University of Gothenburg. Her research group MOBI – (Mobility, Logistics and Automotive Technology) is an interdisciplinary group focusing on sustainable logistics, electric and hybrid vehicles and travel behaviour. She has been involved in several regional, national and European research projects dealing with topics such as the location of intermodal terminals, assessment of policy measures in the field of logistics and sustainable mobility, electric and hybrid vehicles, etc.

Sandra Melo has been focused on urban freight transport and green logistics. She completed her Ph.D. in 2010 at FEUP, Porto, Portugal, investigating the influence of the power of the local context on the performance of last mile ‘best practices’ towards a more sustainable mobility, considering public and private (freight and passenger) transport. She is currently Post-doc researcher at IDMEC-IST, consultant on Transport Policy and Planning and Senior Member of the Portuguese Civil Engineers Chamber. Her current research focuses on urban logistics, sustainable freight transport, transport policy evaluation and transport behaviour decision-making.

Johan Woxenius is professor of Maritime Transport Management and Logistics at University of Gothenburg since 2008. He received the degrees of M.Sc. (Industrial engineering), Ph.D. and associate professor/docent at Chalmers University of Technology. His main research field is maritime and intermodal freight transport and the research covers sustainability, industrial organisation, production systems, traffic designs, information systems and technology surveys and evaluations. He is member of the board of the School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg and leads the university’s part of the maritime research and education programme Lighthouse, the logistics research centre Northern LEAD and the Area of Advance Transport, all run together with Chalmers. He is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, on the scientific advisory boards of several research funding organisations, editorial boards of journals and he is member of the Scientific Committee of the World Conference on Transport Research Society.

Tom van Lier is a postdoctoral researcher in the research group MOBI (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) led by Professor Cathy Macharis. His work focuses on evaluating the sustainability of transport solutions by means of external transport cost calculations. He has been involved in several research projects dealing with topics such as social cost-benefit analysis of transport options, external cost savings of freight bundling, carbon footprint calculations and life-cycle assessment of transport services. He is also involved in the Lean & Green project in Flanders (led by the Flemish Institute for Logistics) as a neutral assessor for the plans of actions of companies to reduce their carbon footprint.
