Preface

This book consists of a number of papers, most of which are based on presentations made at the symposium The Safety of Bridges, held in London on 4-5 July 1996. The symposium was sponsored by the Institution of Civil Engineers, London, and the Highways Agency, an executive agency of the Department of Transport, United Kingdom. The book is not intended to be the proceedings of the symposium, as many of the papers have now been enhanced to include more detailed information and new ones have been added to fill in perceived gaps.
