I would like to highlight two aspects of the introduction of new technology into existing operational environments. Firstly in order to maximize the benefits available from the range of new technologies it is important to consider their impact both on each other, and on existing operational practices. For example

(a) Some of the live data gathered by the district metering system described in the Paper on the Calder experience would be of value in pump scheduling.

(b) The practice of pump scheduling can have serious effects on the operation of treatment plants and the resulting quality of the water produced.
